1 1847 5 red brown SINGLE, RED NEW YORK "OCEAN MAIL" TYPE TOWN CANCELLATION ON 1850 DATED FOLDED LETTER TO LITCHFIELD, CT.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
It Is A Genuine Usage, The Stamp With A Tiny Tear At Top Left AND A HORIZONTAL CREASE, THE VERTICAL FILE FOLD TO RIGHT OF THE STAMP BREAKS THE PAPER OF THE FOLDED LETTER AND AFFECTS THE POSTAL MARKING.
Lot 2274 5c Red Brown, 10c Black (1, 2). Singles of each on two separate covers, 5c with full margins, creased and tiny tear, 10c large margins to cut in at top, bend at left, both covers with clear strikes of red New-York Mar. 18 (1850) Ocean Mail circular datestamp, 5c tied by three strikes with a fourth at right on folded letter to Litchfield Conn., 10c tied by red square grid cancel with the datestamp at right on folded letter to Cleveland O., both covers with file folds, one fold breaks the paper of cover with 5c
FINE APPEARING AND EXTREMELY RARE MATCHED PAIR OF 5-CENT AND 10-CENT 1847 COVERS WITH THE FIRST NEW YORK CITY OCEAN MAIL CANCEL
Stanley B. Ashbrook theorized that the first New York City Ocean Mail cancel was fashioned from the older New York/Ship postmark with the word Ship removed. It is known on a handful of March 1850 covers bearing stamps of the 1847 Issue. Creighton C. Hart described the five 1847 covers that were known to him, dated in March 1850 and occasionally thereafter. (Chronicle 97).
The Polland collection contained a 5c 1847 cover with this cancel dated Oct. 9 (presumably 1850). After July 1851, the cancel was used in black on domestic letters travelling via ocean routes.
