1847 5¢ Issue Cover Auxiliary [?] Handstamp information sought ...
I and another fellow Board member have noticed an 1847 5¢ Franklin FE (the auctioneer's nomenclature: Folded Envelope) being offered in the upcoming Christoph Gartner 8th-11th September Auction No. 11 which has an auxiliary USPO or Private or Bogus handstamp that neither one of us recognizes, nor for which we have a ready reference (www.Auktionen-Gartner.de, Lot 2533).
The New York => Middletown, Connecticut, FE is franked with a Sc 1 neatly tied by a circled red grid oblit, the oblit being accompanied by an adjacent 9th January (1850) red single-ring 'NEW YORK' cds (the cover is receipt-docketed on its face '18' January 9th 1850', the significance of the '18' also being unknown)..
On the FE face, in the lower left-hand corner, is a south-north orientation handstamp with the term 'PACKAGE' in an arc, and the numeral '2' centered within the center of the arc. The significance of this handstamp, if any, is of interest
Thanks; ...

Here is the image from Chuck's post. I have never seen this marking on an 1847 cover.
