This letter is NOT addressed to the wife of Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766), who settled in Cologne in 1709 and founded the world’s oldest perfume factory still in existence. His ‘Eau de Cologne’ (fr. Water of Cologne) became world famous and caused the name ‘Cologne” to become a household name.
Instead, this letter is addressed to one of his descendants with the same name. The factory is currently operated by the 8th generation namesake.
