Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Pair On 1849 Folded Letter From New York City ~ Tied By Red Circular Grid Cancels (112)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) horizontal pair tied by red circular grid cancels on October 26, 1849 dated folded cover sent from New York City to Buffalo, New York. Accompanying red October 26, New York circular date stamp at top right. The folded letter and stamps are in overall fine condition with the stamps slightly affected by their placement at the edge of the letter. Additionally, one stamp has a small vertical crease and there is a minor scissor cut between the two stamps. Part of the address sheet is missing at left, but does not affect the letter. The stamps exhibit a distinct red brown shade which contrasts nicely with the red grid cancels. The minor faults of this item do not greatly detract from the overall importance of this 1849 folded letter with postage paid by a horizontal pair of America's first adhesive postage stamps. 2010 Scott Catalogue value for an 1847 5c pair on cover: $1,400.00.
