Lot 106 Used to Canada, 5c Dark Brown, 2 Fine copies, one slightly cut into the other slight crease. Tied by New York grid and pmk on folded cover to Toronto, Canada bearing ms credit and Toronto arrival on reverse.

Alexander listed as 1/15/49
Joseph Davis Ridout (1809-1884) and George Percival Ridout (1807-1873) were in the hardware business, with partners Alexander T. Crombie and James Aikenhead. George represented Toronto in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1851 to 1854. George Ridout retired from the hardware business in 1866. He became governor for the British America Assurance Company in 1853 and became manager for the same company in 1871, serving until his death in Toronto at the age of 65.
From 1843 until it failed in 1866 Joseph was a director of the Bank of Upper Canada. In 1876 he retired from the hardware business, leaving his partners to carry it on. The business still continues in the hands of the Aikenhead family, though it is now owned by Molson Companies Limited.
