1847, 5¢ red brown (No. 1), ample to large margins except clear at top, blue manuscript "X" and tied by horizontal file fold on 1849 folded letter with clear octagon handstamp, "Taber & Bagley/American Hotel/New York" on bottom flap, contents written by Wm. Phipps Blake, a minerologist who later worked as a mining engineer in Alaska, California, China and Japan. Here he discusses going to California and describes an invention for panning for gold which he is selling at a store at Rathbuns Hotel for $6.00 each; lettersheet with some internal separations, Fine and rare. ¨Estimate $1,000-1,500.
