Based on the description and docketing, this letter was postmarked in NYC on Jan 1, 1849
William Gross exhibit frame 8-3 on the USPCS website, which notes that the letter was written by George Bancroft (1800-1891), historian and statesman, to his publisher. At the time of writing, he was US Minister to Great Britain (1946-49) being previously Secretary of the Navy (1845-46).
Charles Coffin Little (1799-1869) and James Brown (1800-55) were book sellers located at 122 Washington Street in Boston. They were also publishers, focusing mainly on legal books at their start in 1845. The company is still in business today.
