Notes
Scott # 1 on Cover dated, Sept. 12, 1848 from the Bank of Commerce in New York, to Cocoran & Riggs, Washington City, D.C. It has a red New York cancel with a red barr cancel over the stamp. The stamp has just over 3 margins, with the left margin just cut to the line of the outer frame. There is also a manuscript "Paid" above the stamp. The cover has part of the wax seal and the part of the letter where the paper was affixed to the wax seal was cut away to open the cover to read. I can not see any damage to the stamp. This is a great cover for the collector of Classic U.S. This cover is listed in; "United States 1847 Issue, A Cover Census, Published, 2001, by Thomas J. Alexander listed in the book on the bottom of page 399
