Lot 2138 5c brown, clear impression, margins all around, very fine, and another copy, similar shade, margins all around except barely touched one place, with unusual pre-printing fold and Messenkope’s Union Square Post Office 1849 (2c) green pen cancel, fine, all tied by clear red grid on envelope bearing matching New York NOV 20 (1849) pmk to Trenton NJ. From the Thomas J Alexander Papers in the APRL where the cover date is listed as 11/22/49
Actual date in cds in NOV 28.
Alexander lists two Nov covers from NYC to Trenton – (1) 11/28/47 with a copy of 106L1 and (2) 11/22/49 with a Messenkope handstamp. The Scott Specialized catalog lists the Messenkope Union Square Post Office as established in 1849 by Charles F. Messenkope and 106L1 issued in 1849. Use on an 1847 cover is impossible (or fraudulent).
I’m inclined to believe that both listings’ in Alexander are incorrect and the cover mailing date is actually 11/28/49. However, I cannot rule out the possibility that an 11/22/49 cover also exists with the handstamp and Thomas just attached the wrong lot description to his notes.
Alexander listed as 11/28/47 but really 11/28/49
Mary Louisa Ingham (1829-1883) was married to Edwin Emerson (1823-1908) of Trenton NJ. Edwin Emerson was originally from New York City. After early training as a printer and some work as a journalist, he entered Princeton in 1845, graduated in 1849, then attended the Princeton Theological Seminary from 1849-1852. In 1852 he married Mary Louisa Ingham, of Trenton, New Jersey, and became the pastor of the Presbyterian church in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
Mary Louisa Ingham was the daughter of US Representative Secretary of the Treasury (1829-31) Hon Samuel Delucenna Ingham (1779-1860) and Deborah Kay Hall (1796-1862)
