5c Dark Brown (1a). Large to ample margins incl. portion of adjoining stamp at bottom, tied by red "PHILADA. RAILROAD" straightline handstamp struck multiple times with parts of two strikes relatively clear, red "New -York Jul. 31" circular datestamp on 1847 folded letter to Avon Conn., heavy strikes of the handstamp slightly break the paper or thin the stamp in a few places, some age spotting, still Very Fine appearing and scarce first month use of the 5c 1847 with the Philadelphia Railroad straightline, with 1973 P.F. certificate
