The 1847 stamp on this cover paid the U.S. inland rate from city of origin to the port of departure. New York is less than 300 miles from Boston so 5¢ postage was required. The wiggly black line on the cover is the English shilling mark and it means that one shilling sterling was due from the addressee to pay for both ocean carriage and British internal postage.
Lot 260 5c Brown (1), margins except frame line shaved at TL, tied by red square grid and bit of bold shilling mark on July 30 1847 folded cover to Liverpool, fine and rare. the 2nd transatlantic voyage to carry the '47 issue.
