US 2 on a folded letter with a blue Lockport MI cancel. This is a cover with a pen cancel and a blue Lockport MI cancel on the cover. The letter is to the Auditor General of Michigan requesting information on taxes and interest on land in Michigan.

This cover was mailed from Lockport NY on April 4, 1851 by Lyman A. Spaulding.
Lyman A. Spalding was a Quaker merchant involved in manufacturing and banking in New York State and the Midwest, and real estate and lumbering in Michigan Territory early in the 19th century. He was an active member in the abolition movement, edited the Plain Truth, and established the newspaper Priestcraft Exposed and Primitive Christianity Defended.
His 1811-1864 Papers are housed in the Columbia University Library. Addition documents (9 diaries) are housed as Syracuse University.
