Scott #1a (dark brown) "Dot In S" variety on Folded Letter to Canada (019)
1847 5c dark brown shade Franklin (Scott #1a) single exhibiting the Dot in the S plate variety tied by manuscript cancel on 1848 folded letter from Lockport, New York to Toronto, Canada. Accompanying blue March 16, Lockport, NY circular date stamp cancel and applied later that day March 16, 1848 Queenstown border exchange office handstamp, both at left. Manuscript 4 ½ due marking on front and Toronto receiving backstamp.
Less than 20% of all recorded cross-border usages to Canada during this period were paid for by a single 5c stamp. Most cross-border stamped usages utilized a 10c single or a pair of 5c stamps due to the over 300 mile distances of most U.S. commercial centers, like Philadelphia and New York City, from the U.S.-Canadian border. An extremely fine 5c dark brown shade single with the Dot in the S plate variety on a very uncommon under 300 miles rate cross-border 1847 Issue usage.
