Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Single On Leeds, New York Cover ~ Only Three 1847 Issue Covers From Leeds (150)
1847 5c red brown shade Franklin (Scott #1) single canceled by a manuscript pen on a cover sent from Leeds, New York (Greene County) to Kendall, New York (Orleans County). Accompanying very clear manuscript December 10, Leeds, NY postmark at top left. The cover has small faults but an overall very fine appearance with the stamp exhibiting ample margins all around. 1999 Philatelic Foundation Certificate (PFC)
The cover offered here is one of only three known 1847 Issue covers sent from Leeds, New York - All 5c Stamps. The limited number of surviving covers is no doubt in part due to the fact that Leeds did not officially receive any 1847 stamps of either denomination throughout the issue's use. The 5c 1847 Issue stamp paid the postage for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce of less traveling under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the New York state postal history collector, general U.S. cover collector or 1847 Issue enthusiast.
