His father, Samuel Gilbert Hathaway Sr. (1780-1867), was a justice of the peace from 1810-1858, served as a member of the State Assembly in 1814 and 1818 (from Cortland County, served in the State Senate in 1822, was a major general in the New York Militia, 1823-1858, and was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1833.
The letter may have been written by his father, given the S. G. H. initials at the top and partially on the stamp.
