Single of each, 5¢ margins to cut in at left, late impression, 10¢ with full to large margins, tied by red 4-circle targets on 1851 large-size folded cover to North Adams, Mass. with matching "Greenwich N.Y. Feb. 8" c.d.s. and additional Roman numeral "V" handstamp for an additional 5¢ due to make up a 20¢ rate; each stamp with small corner crease and 10¢ with ironed-out vertical crease, cover with wear and folds, still a showpiece and Fine. Estimate $20,000-30,000

At the beginning of the 1847 period, a writer sending a letter weighing over 1 oz. but under 1½ oz. would have paid a triple rate, but the Act of March 3, 1849 made this impossible. Letters weighing over ½ oz. to 1 oz. were charged a double rate, but two additional rates for each succeeding ounce or fraction thereof. The change resulted in confusion, and the use of the Roman numeral "V" here strikingly reflects this. Franked for the under 300 miles rate, and weighing under 2 oz., the letter was rated 2 x 5¢ + 5¢ + 5¢.
