There are 5 covers in the census to Erastus W. Smith in NYC. This is the only one with two 5c stamps. The other 4 have 10c Washingtons. The handwriting on this cover matches the 7/23/xx cover.
Erastus W. Smith is listed in Rode’s 1854 NYC directory as an engineer located at 4 Bowling Green. He is not listed in the 1848 nor 1849 editions of Doggett’s (I don’t have the 1850 or 1851 editions.) The only year dated cover in the census is 1851, although the July 23rd cover must be earlier. I would surmise that this cover is 1850 or 1851. Mr. Smith was involved in the design and construction of steam engines.
