In 1832, a branch of the Northwestern Bank of Virginia was established at Wellsburg. John C. Campbell was the first President and Samuel Jacob, Cashier. Samuel Jacob (1803-1884) was a farmer, raised fine sheep and cattle, and was cashier of the Wellsburg bank for over 40 years.
