Harvey D. Smith (1789-186?) was born in Pawlot, Vt. and moved to Gouverneur in 1824. He operated an apothecary. He later became a Justice of the Peace, represented the town in the NYS Assembly (1829), surrogate (1859) and special county judge (1858). His year of death is listed in various references as 1961, 1864 and 1866.
James M. Smith of Buffalo is listed in the 1853 Buffalo city Directory as employed by the firm of Solomon G. Haven & Smith, attorneys at law, at 7 Court Street.
