Lot 1175 1847, 5¢ red brown (No. 1), mostly large to ample margins, deep shade approaching dark brown, excellent impression, cancelled by light red grid on 1848 folded letter to Clinton, N.Y., clear blue "Buffalo N.Y. Mar 25" double oval postmark with ornaments at bottom, Very Fine.

Othniel Samuel Williams (1813-1880), prominent Clinton judge (Oneida County Surrogate Court, elected 1851), attorney, businessman, investor, who had built the Alexander Hamilton Inn for his private home in the 1830 period, became president of the Utica, Clinton, and Binghamton RR. He served on the Board of Trustees for Hamilton College in Clinton, NY (1847-1880) and was Treasurer of the college (1850-1880).
