John Gardiner, a prominent Norwalk, Ohio resident, was born in New London County, Connecticut, in 1816. He came to Ohio in the fall of 1832. A banker by profession, Gardiner helped organize the Norwalk Branch of the State Bank of Ohio. Eighteen years later, he helped establish and became president of the Norwalk National Bank. He also played an active role in the area's early railroad development. In 1850, Gardiner helped secure the charter of the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad Company. Throughout his career, he served as a director of numerous railroad companies, becoming the president of several lines.
Gardiner married Frances Mary Joslin in 1843 and was the father of four children. He died in 1915 at the age of 99.
