1847 5c brown orange Franklin (Scott #1d) single tied by a black numeral "5" in circle cancel on cover sent from Sarah F. Tobey at Princeton, New Jersey to Dr. S. B. (Samuel Boyd) Tobey at Providence, Rhode Island. Accompanying black November 11, Princeton, New Jersey circular date stamp cancel at top left. The stamp exhibits a nice example of this rare 1847 Issue color shade as well as ample margins to just touching frameline at bottom right. A small tear at top of the cover does not affect the very fine overall appearance or special nature of this item. 2000 & 2007 Philatelic Foundation Certificates (PFC)
The letter's recipient Dr. Samuel Boyd Tobey was born on November 12, 1805 in Maine and died June 23, 1868 in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Tobey could trace his family's connection with America to his Great-Great-Great Grandfather Thomas Tobey who arrived in Massachusetts from England at some point between 1630-1650. The cover offered here was sent by Dr. Tobey's second wife. His first wife, also named Sarah died at age 31, four years into their marriage. Around the time this cover was sent, Dr. Tobey was a Trustee of Brown University. During the American Civil War, Dr. Tobey held a position of leadership with the Society of Friends For New England. In this capacity, a letter from President Abraham Lincoln is known sent to Dr. Tobey from the White House on March 19, 1862.
Lincoln wrote "My dear Sir: A domestic affliction, of which doubtless you are informed, has delayed me so long in making acknowledgment for the very kind and appropriate letter, signed, on behalf, and by direction of a Meeting of the Representatives of the Society of Friends for New-England, held at Providence, Rhode Island...Engaged as I am, in a great war, I fear it will be difficult for the world to understand how fully I appreciate the principles of peace, inculcated in this letter, and everywhere, by the Society of Friends..."
Only 84 5c 1847 Issue covers sent from New Jersey are recorded. Of this group only 13 are recorded sent from Princeton during the period of the 1847 Issue's use (July 1, 1847-June 30, 1851). The 5-cent stamp on this cover pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. Though it is extraordinarily common on mail sent today, a sender writing an identifying element like their name or city on the front of an envelope during the 1847 Issue's use was very uncommon. We know that this piece of mail was sent by Dr. Samuel Boyd Tobey's wife Sarah because she wrote her name in the top left corner. This is an ideal item for the New Jersey state postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue shades or collector of great postal stories exhibited through classic U.S. covers.
