VERY FINE AND CHOICE EARLY VALENTINE COVER WITH 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE OVERPAYING THE LOCAL DROP RATE.
The 1848 Valentine season was the first in which the 1847 Issue was available for mailing Valentines. Examples are rare, and those dated February 14th are exceedingly rare.

In the Arch Sale, this cover, with the original 1848 valentine still enclosed, brought a hammer price of $4,500.20 According to the Alexander Census, this cover had a good Philatelic Foundation Certificate, although the certificate did not accompany the cover in the auction sale.21 This cover was subsequently sold in a Siegel auction in December 2001 where it was described as having a bad Philatelic Foundation Certificate issued in 2001 which states that the stamp did not originate on the cover.22 It brought a hammer price of $475.

The present owner, NJPHS member, Harvey Mirsky, informs us that he was the buyer at that auction, and that he later re-submitted the cover to the Philatelic Foundation. The submission for reconsideration included a further analysis prepared by the late postal historian Calvet Hahn. This cover now owns a good certificate
