It is a genuine stamp, genuinely used on an 1850 docketed folded outer address sheet addressed to Baltimore, Md. The stamp, which has a small scissors cut in the lower right margin and a manuscript cancellation, tied by a black Mount Holly, N.J. Mar. 3 postmark. This cover is one of two 1847 covers recorded in the US Classics Society census of 1847 covers.

William Rollinson Whittingham (1805-1879) was the fourth Episcopal Bishop of Maryland. He had many ties to New Jersey including missionary work in northern NJ, after graduating from Columbia University in 1827, and rector of St. Marks in Orange, NJ. There he met his wife, Hannah Harrison. In 1840 he became Bishop of Maryland and moved to Baltimore. After serving for 39 years, he retired in Orange, NJ and died shortly thereafter. He is buried at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Millburn, NJ. Whittingham was a strong supporter of the Union and helped keep Maryland from seceding during the Civil War.
