Lot 815 #1 on folded letter, large clear St Louis Mo JAN 29 5 red cds with matching red grid cancel, 3 nice margins with 4th just touching lower left, 2 tiny nicks in margins, faint file fold across top of stamp, clean.

Hampton boasted many firsts: A ferry that would take wagons, livestock and families to the Iowa side after stopping at the first large, mercantile store (now the Brettun & Black Museum). In the Brettun & Black store was the first elevator in the Midwest. Products sold included seeds, provisions, plows, fabric, tools, dishes, barrels of salt pork and whiskey
Francis Black b 1815 Barre, Worcester Co., MA; to IL in 1841 m Charlotte E. Brettun.
Soranus L. Brettun (1806-1881), born in Livermore, Maine, moved to Hampton Illinois in 1837. Originally he sold building lots to establish the town of Hampton. In 1846 he joined partnership with Francis Black in a two-story store. He sold out his interest in the store in 1858 to his son-in-law, Milton H. Crapster.
