1847 Issue, 5c Brown (#1), three full margins, cut into at foot, tied to fresh 1849 folded letter to Springfield, Illinois by red Saint Louis Missouri November 3 postmark, additional postmark to right. Scarcer single franking for under 300 mile rate.
Original letter of C.B. Miraben, Scotts Hotel:
"St. Louis, November 2, 1849
Mr. Jacob Bunn Dear Sir
I am located here for the last four seasons for the purpose of supplying St.Louis with the article of (Fresh Baltimore Oysters) Raw and in their own Liquor (packed in ice all the way from Baltimore). (They are not cooked nor pickled) but just as they come out of the shell. I have been supplying every house in the City. They are all go here (being a very superior article they are put up in Square cans of one gallon) & (half gallon each) which I am selling here now for $3.50 for Gallon cans & $1. 75 for the half gallon cans. I have had several Gentlemen of your place talk to me about sending some to your place and not being able to leave St. Louis to take some there, I have been requested by them to send you a few cans thinking they would sale well in Springfield, if you think they would Sale and would sale they for me.
Please write to me immediately and I will send you few cans packed in ice. Please tell me if you have any ice in your place for they must be keep in ice all the time to keep them good, and I would send them to you in Refrigerator, which I have to send them every place when I sale Oysters. Please enquire of your Oyster house and friends whether they would like to get some, I am receiving fresh supplies every week and will be able to supple them all winter. I sale great many in Quincy, Keokuk and Burlington Iowa where I introduced them only last Season, and will be able to sale great many this season, Thank you. Think they would sale and wish to have some sent immediately. Telegraph me and I will send some Monday evening by the Packet. "Time and Tide'; which will reach you I think Tuesday evening.
I forgot to mention the gallon cans contains about 14 to 15 dozens, and half gallon about 7 dozens.
I thank you to write to me on the subject and if you think they should be wanted immediately Telegraph and I will send them immediately.
