Manning sale Dec 16, 1976 lot 8 where year date is listed as 1846.
PF 59870 #1, genuine use on cover postmarked St Louis Mo Jan 26 to Ottawa Ill
Letter addressed to William M. True, merchant, city treasurer of Ottawa in the 1850’s, secretary of the LaSalle County Mutual Fire Insurance Co. (1855), Alderman (1855), city treasurer (1858), and treasurer of the Old Settlers’ Society (1861). One source has him dying in April 1850 (clearly wrong) while another has him as a business partner of Henry Whipple in Chicago up until 1869 when Whipple bough him out and then lost heavily in the Great Fire of 1871. (Whipple rebuilt and there is a street named after him in Chicago.)
