Large margins to clear, cancelled by red grid (not tied), red "Jamaica Plain Ms. May 26" circular datestamp on folded letter to Portsmouth N.H., unusual postmaster's postage due notation "Not Paid R Seaver PM, 5cts. Unpaid" in legible manuscript, Very Fine, the stamp is tied by the notation but not by the grid, which leads us to believe the sender attempted to use a cancelled stamp to pay postage, which was detected and rejected by the Jamaica Plain postmaster, with 1984 P.F. certificate

IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE STAMP WITH A NATURAL FIBER INCLUSION AT BOTTOM LEFT CAUSING A NATURAL "PINHOLE"; THE COVER WITH NOTATIONS INDICATING THAT THE STAMP WAS NOT ACCEPTED FOR PAYMENT OF POSTAGE DUE TO PRIOR USE.
Robert Seaver (1812-1882) was a grocer for over 50 years at the same store at 741 Centre Street, where the town Post Office was also located, in Jamaica Plain (originally part of the town of Roxbury). He also served several positions in town politics and represented West Roxbury in the Legislature. Robert served as Postmaster from 1833 to 1849. In the 1870’s the Post Office was moved out of the store.
