Scott #1b 1847 5c Brown Orange Franklin Single On Farnumsville, Massachusetts Folded Letter ~ Only Recorded 1847 Issue From Farnumsville (128)
1847 5c brown orange shade Franklin (Scott #1b) single canceled by a manuscript pen cancel on 1850 dated folded letter sent from Farnumsville, Massachusetts (Worcester County) to Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Accompanying very clear manuscript November 22, Farnumsville, Mass postmark at top left. The folded letter is in overall very fine condition with the stamp showcasing a nice brown orange shade and ample margins on all sides to just touching frameline at top left. A small tear at top of the 5c stamp does not take away at all from the unique nature of this 1847 Issue folded letter. 1999 Philatelic Foundation Certificate (PFC)
Presently, 1,141 5c 1847 Issue covers are recorded sent from Massachusetts cities and towns. Of this group, 943 are from Boston, Springfield, Northampton or Cambridge, leaving just 198 5c 1847 Issue covers sent from all other Massachusetts towns.
Considering the number of towns and population of Massachusetts in the mid-19th century, this is an incredibly limited number of covers from small MA towns. The folded letter offered here is the only known 1847 Issue stamp of either denomination used from Farnumsville, Massachusetts. No doubt in part due to the fact that Farnumsville did not officially receive any 1847 stamps of either denomination throughout the issue's use.
