Scott #1 Single Tied By Red Grid Cancel On Folded Cover From Boston To Providence, RI
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single nicely tied by a red grid cancel on a folded cover sent from Boston, Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island. Accompanying red November 16, 1847 Boston 5 cts circular date stamp cancel at center of cover. Manuscript "Eagle Bank Boston/Nov 16. 1847" on reverse. The 1847 Issue 5c stamp, pays the under 300-mile rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less, exhibits a distinct shade and sharp engraved details along with large margins all around except just in at top left. The 5c stamp has a light bend at left corner, which does not detract in the least from the very fine overall appearance of this 1847 Issue cover. John A. Field was the second cashier of the Mechanics’ Bank, which was incorporated in June, 1823. Its early location was on the second floor at 21 Market Square. Later it was domiciled at 25 South Main Street, and about 1851 was removed to 27 South Main. Field served as cashier until 1873.
