| Notes | 3c Black on light blue unsurfaced paper CDS NEW YORK NOV 24 (1842) ms 18 3/4 cent postage NYC to New Hampshire. Robert A. Siegel sale 767 (1995 Rarities) lot 355 realized 2000 Illustrated in the Kapiloff exhibit (courtesy of Richard C. Frajola) which year dates the cover to 1842 and that the 2c carrier rate was overpaid by 1c. Henry Whitney Bellows (June 11, 1814 – January 30, 1882) was an American clergyman, and the planner and president of the United States Sanitary Commission, the leading soldiers' aid society, during the American Civil War. Under his leadership, the USSC became the major source of spiritual and physical aid for wounded Union soldiers. In 1839, he became pastor of the First Congregational (Unitarian) church in New York City (afterwards All Souls church), in charge of which he remained until his death. |
