The first US Postage Stamps were issued in New York City in 1842 for the US City Despatch Post. Operated Aug 16, 1842 – Nov 28, 1846. Scott Catalog 6LB1- 6LB7. Forwarded from NYC to Rye NY on 9/22/1842 The carrier stamp was probably applied on 9/22/1842 either to be delivered to Bond Street or to be carried to the NY PO on its way to Rye. The stamp was applied on top of the Albany to NYC rating. The census listing for this cover is 9/22/1842. As a general rule of thumb, the dating in this census is the date when the US City Despatch service was provided and not when the cover was written nor originally mailed.
