| Notes | Announceent of the Post from Robert A. Siegel sale 766 lot 624 The US Post started operation on Aug 16, 1842. The latest cover known from the earlier City Despatch Post operated by Alexander M Greig was an Aug 13, 1842 cover featured as lot 492 in Richard C. Frajola's sale of the Middendorf collection and illustrated as figure 17 in Scott Trepel's Commentary of The Dr. Leonard A. Kapiloff Collection (Part 2, The Penny Post, Vol. 2 No. 2 April 1992, p34) The post operated under the US Post Office until Nov 28, 1846 but covers were delivered to the US mails through the private post for several weeks beyond this date, by special arrangement with the New York postmaster Robert Morris.
