Letter is addressed to Merritt Clark (1803-1898), cashier of the Bank of Poultney in West Poultney, Vermont.
The stamp is from position 31 on the plate and the New York square grid cancel confirms the year dating as 1847.
The 1846 edition of Doggett’s NYC directory lists William Maxwell & Co. as brokers at 69 Wall Street.
