Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries sale 1262 realized 250
Rufus Howard King (1784-1867) came to Albany in 1814 and went into partnership with his brother-in-law, William McHarg, as a dry goods merchant. [William was married to Rufus’ sister Sophia (1789-1838)]. Rufus became a director in the New York State National Bank at an early day and succeeded the late Francis Bloodgood (1775-1840) as its president, soon after which he withdrew from his mercantile business and devoted himself to banking and to the purchase and sale of stocks. He was also president of the Albany Savings Bank and the Albany Insurance Company.
His son, also named Rufus H King (1820-1890) was a lawyer in Catskill, NY, member of the US House of Representatives (1855-1857) and president of the Catskill National Bank (1865-67).
It is much more likely that this cover was addressed to the father, rather than the son.
