Providence RI Postmaster Provisional 10X1 cancelled by black checkmark and tied by two strikes of red 5 in circle on Feb 27 cover to New York City.
The stamp is genuine Pos 5. The pen check mark is fake, while the Providence c.d.s. is likely fine, the red “5” in circle was not used in Providence. There is no Red “Paid” hand stamp as you would expect to see on a genuine example. The letter is dated, February 27th, 1846, 6 months before the stamp was issued (August 24, 1846).
