Jane via Balto.” at lower left and manuscript “Paid” alongside stamp confirms it originates, Oct. 10 receipt docketing, some soiling affects stamp, ink erosion in several letters of address, some splitting along folds

San Juan (St. John’s) was the capital of Spanish Puerto Rico. Mail between Puerto Rico and the United States at this time was carried by private ships. This letter was sent to Kirkland, Chase & Co. in Baltimore, shipping agents who transported goods and mail on frequent sailing voyages to and from Puerto Rico. This letter was carried on the brig Francis Jane, which sailed from Baltimore for San Juan on September 12, 1846 (American and Commercial Daily Advertiser, Sep. 12, 1846).
