Position 19, large margins, cancelled by neat blue penstrokes on blue folded letter datelined “New York May 25th 1847” to Bridgewater Mass., clear strike of red “Steamer 5” in oval handstamp, light horizontal file fold well away from stamp, Very Fine, very desirable and rare Long Island Sound steamboat cover with the New York Provisional.

The Lazell, Perkins and Co. iron mill was started in 1785 by brothers Nathan and Isaac Lazell. Jacob Perkins joined the company in 1795 and later became a partner. The company name was established in 1816. The mill made iron pots for the whaling industry along with cut nails and iron hoops for wooden barrels. In 1825 the company was incorporated as the Bridgewater Iron Manufacturing Company but continued to operate under the name of Lazell, Perkins & Co. for many years. By 1860 the company was one of the largest iron manufacturers in the country, providing key parts to the USS Monitor and other iron clad warships as well as ships for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
