AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
It Is A Genuine Usage ON AN 1846 FOLDED LETTER
Lot 625 5c Black on white (3X1) pos 4/6, vertical pair, full framelines on three sides, large part of bottom frameline, usual manuscript cancel, blue Baltimore Nov 12 datestamp, matching Paid and 10 in oval handstamps on blue 1846 folded letter to New York, fresh and in excellent condition.
According to the Hayes census, there are two known pairs of the 5c on white, both on folded letters, the November 12, 1846 folded letter in this sale (#17) and the March 21, 1847 folded cover addressed to Miss Mary Floyd, Port Tobacco, Maryland (#27). The pair on the later cover is pictured in the Luff book (pl V) and shows a heavy crease between the stamps.
Extremely fine. By far the finer of the two recorded Baltimore Provisional pairs. Ex Gibson, Latham, Caspary (where described as one of the remarkable items in the collection.)
