Notes
Lot 280 1845 Baltimore Md. Provisional 5c, blue on white, Scott 7, a very fine entire envelope addressed to Washington, D. C. In the upper right corner are the following marks in blue: PAID and 5 in an oval struck twice, in black James M. Buchanan also handstamped. The envelope is cancelled with a blue Baltimore town postmark, dated March 1, and the envelope is endorsed in pencil 1846. On this envelope the PAID is above the hand-stamped signature and is undoubtedly the example which J. N. Luff quotes when he states One copy is known on which the word Paid is placed above the signature, a magnificent item.
