Lot 604 5c Carmine Red on white envelope (2XU1), brilliant impression of provisional markings, full sharp strike of blue Annapolis Apr 8 (1846-47) datestamp on small neat envelope addressed to Charles J. Carstairs, Philadelphia Pa., very fresh and in excellent condition.
This example of the Annapolis provisional entire was sold to Ferrary after its discovery in 1895. At the Ferrary sale on April 7, 1922, it realized the equivalent of $2,786. It was later sold as part of the Arthur Hind collection on November 20, 1933 for $2,500 to Alfred H. Caspary. In the November 15, 1955 sale of Caspary's provisional issues, the Annapolis entire fetched $11,000. It was later acquired by Josiah K. Lilly and sold after his death in the February 2, 1967 auction for $25,000. At both the Caspary and Lilly auctions, the Annapolis entire realized more than the Alexandria blue provisional cover. It has not been sold privately since 1967.
Extremely Fine, only two examples of the Annapolis provisional entire are known. One of the rarest and most outstanding designs of all United States Postal Stationery. Illustrated in Lidman's Treasury of Stamps (p59, Abrams, 1976), Linn's Philatelic Gems (pp 149-150), Life magazine, ˜World's Rarest Stamps' (May 3, 1954), Ex. Ferrary, Hind, Caspary, Lilly

Charles S. Carstairs is not listed in the 1846 or 1847 McElroy's Philadelphia City Directory but John Latour is listed at 261 S Front Street.
Charles S. Carstair is listed in the 1848 McElroy's Philadelphia City Directory as a merchant at 86 S Front Street and living at 31 Lombard Street.
This indicates that he moved to Philadelphia in 1847 (McElroy's was published at the beginning of the year) and helps year date this cover to 1847.
