Sarah Johns Fairfield (1825-1886), an educator, was the daughter of Rev. Michaiah Fairfield (1786-1858) and sister of Rev. Dr. Edmund Burke Fairfield (1821-1904), former President of Hillsdale College and 12th Lieutenant-Governor of Michigan, and Rev. Minor Wynn Fairfield (1823-1901), Congregational clergyman. She married Dr. Nathan Smith Burton (1821-1909), prominent American Baptist clergyman and educator, in Oct 1850. Dr. Burton graduated from Western Reserve College, located in Hudson, Ohio in 1846 and completed his theoretical studies there in 1850.
After being ordained in 1850, Dr. Burton pastored for Baptist congregations in Elyria (1850-1853), and other towns in Ohio, Michigan, Massachusetts and Iowa over the next 4 decades. Therefore, it is very likely that Dr. Burton was the writer of this letter and other similar covers in the census.
There are 19 covers from this correspondence in the census. All of the covers from Elyria were probably mailed in 1850, as well as many from Hudson, Ohio.
