The stamp paid the forwarding rate from Washington to Charlestown.
Letter to John Moore McCalla Jr. (1832-1897), resident of Washington DC. He graduated from the Medical Department of Columbian College, now George Washington University, in 1853. He was involved with the American Colonization Society and served as a clerk and assistant acting surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War. He returned to private practice after the War but retired in 1877 due to chronic asthma. He then managed the Varnum family real estate holdings in Washington DC., inherited by his wife, Helen Varnum.
His father, John Moore McCalla Sr. (1793-1873) was a lawyer, politician, brigadier general of the Kentucky militia, and the second auditor of the United States. In the late 1840s, he was involved with concerns of the American Colonization Society, in particular arrangements for emigrants to sail to Liberia as well as collecting funds for the Washington Monument Fund. Some of his correspondence is housed in the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond, Va. A number of family papers are also housed at Duke University.
