Somersworth, originally named Sligo and, later, Great Falls, NH lies directly across the Salman Falls River from the town of Berwick, Maine
John Adams Burleigh (1800-1860) was an attorney and mill agent at Great Falls Manufacturing Co., founded by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Wendell of Boston in 1822, a textile business that included a woolen mill, a mill for spinning thread, and a mill for weaving cotton, in Somersworth, NH. He was the younger brother of William Burleigh (1785-1827), from South Berwick and the first Congressman from Maine (after it separated from Massachusetts in 1820). John studied law in his brother’s office and later formed a brief partnership with Hiram Hayes Hobbs, a fellow student, before leaving Maine to settle in Somersworth NH.
