The 1848 edition of the Buffalo Commercial Directory lists the law firm of Adams, Hall & Bowen at 12 Spaulding’s Exchange. The attorneys were William Adams, Nathan K. Hall and Dennis Bowen. In the 1851 edition, the firm is listed as Hall & Bowen.
Dennis Bowen (1820-1877) studied law as a clerk in the Buffalo law firm founded by former President of the United States Millard Fillmore: Fillmore, Law and Haven. He was admitted to the New York State bar in 1842. Later that same year he formed a partnership with N. K. Hall, and continued to practice law, with different partners, until his death in 1877.
It is of interest that Grover Cleveland, future Mayor of Buffalo and President of the United States, studied law in Bowen’s firm (Rogers, Bowen and Rogers, later Bowen, Rogers and Locke), for four years and remained with the firm for another four years after he was admitted to the bar in 1859.
