Lot 5012 1847, 5¢ brown (Scott 1 var.), tied by manuscript "Union Ellery, March 12" (1849) on a folded letter to Albany, N.Y.; in the letter, to Geo. W. Patterson, "President of the Senate," the writer, Dr. Odin Benedict, asks that he be appointed Postmaster of Union Ellery [later West Ellery, then just Ellery] because, "our Loco Poko P.M. has privately resigned and procured the appropriate of Wm Bacon…and I wish to prevent it." the pair has a full margin at the top and parts at the left & bottom, the cover has some foxing, but the letter is clear and easily read. A most interesting piece of Chautauqua County, N.Y. Postal History.
