Letter addressed to Samuel Jones Tilden (1814-1886), lawyer, Governor of NY and failed candidate for President of the US, losing to Rutherford B. Hays by 1 electoral vote in a disputed election in 1876. The 1849 edition of Doggett’s lists his office at 13 Pine Street.
Green refers to Andrew Haswell Green (1820-1903). Green studied law at the offices of Samuel J. Tilden. The 1849 edition of Doggett’s lists his office at 11 Pine Street.
