Scottish-born James Montgomery (1794-1880) was a superintendent at the Graniteville Manufacturing Co., a textile mill established in the 1840s. Mr. Montgomery is mentioned in correspondences from the owner William Gregg in four letters from 1850, 1858, and two from 1860 in the Historical Engineering Record of Graniteville Mills. Gregg hired Montgomery from Saco Maine in 1849.
