The town of South Hanover, Indiana is along the Ohio River in southeast Indiana in Jefferson County. The town was named after Hanover, NH. There was another town in Shelby County already named Hanover, so this town was named “South Hanover”. When the post office in that town closed, the town of South Hanover was renamed Hanover.
Hanover is the home of Hanover College, a small Presbyterian liberal arts college founded in 1827. “Undergraduate” H. S. Kritz was probably a student there when this letter was sent. He was the corresponding secretary of the Union Literary Society, a student organization dedicated to encouraging oratory, debate, and reading.
Henry Seymour Kritz (1825-1915) was a student of Hanover College starting in 1847. In 1852, in conjunction with Prof. Coyner, he took charge of the Presbyterian Academy at Waveland (which afterwards became the Waveland Collegiate Institute). This position Prof. Kritz held for more than 20 years. In 1876, he was made superintendent of the city schools at Crawfordsville, and in 1877 he became associated with Prof. Bassett in the preparatory department of Wabash College.
