Lot 10050 5c Red Brown (1). Cleaned-plate impression, large margins to ample, light corner crease at top right, cancelled by blue grid, matching "Norwich Ct. Mar. 5" (1851) circular datestamp on blue folded letter written by William A. Buckingham to his aunt in Clinton Conn., some splitting along folds, Very Fine, the sender was mayor of Norwich until 1850 and governor of Connecticut from 1858-1866 and was instrumental in that state's efforts to support the Union during the Civil War, this cover unlisted in USPCS census

William Alfred Buckingham (1804 – 1875) was an American politician who served as the governor of Connecticut during the Civil War and later as a United States senator. His offices include: Mayor, Norwich, Connecticut, 1849, 1850, 1856, 1857; Governor of Connecticut, 1858-1866; U.S. Senate, 1869-1875. He also served as Norwich’s town treasurer and a member of the city council. In 1848 he helped organize the Hayward Rubber Co.
William had an uncle named Giles Buckingham but he died in 1831.
